JIC Police have participated in the State Bicycle Safety Program Grant through the University of Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation over the past several years. From 2013 through present, Chief Pruitt fitted and distributed more than 2000 bicycle helmets through many community events such as the Children's Home Society annual 5K run, TurtleFest and the U.S. Coast Guard's Open House. At every event, JIC's booth is always one of the most popular.
Mayor Dan Comerford, Town Clerk Jude Goudreau, Captain Dale Allen and his wife Sue are some of the volunteers who have manned our helmet booths. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help make this program a success. This program is provided at no cost to the Town through the grant and has greatly increased the safety of the bike riding public in South Florida! A big thank you goes out to the University of Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation through the Pedbike Resource Center.
